| Overview |
 |
Although most of the summits and routes in the range were first scaled during the first 40 years of the century, some of the most difficult routes are still only climbed by a handful.
The Grand Teton is far and away the most popular objective in the park. As many as half of the people who attempt the Grand, however, fall short of their goal due to weather conditions, poor conditioning, or altitude effects. Tragically, there are a number of accidents, and even a few fatalities in the range each summer, due mostly to uncontrolled slips or falls on steep snow fields.
For beginning and intermediate climbers, the safest way to explore the Tetons is with a guide. Two local guide schools offer 3-day courses designed to get you up and down the Grand and other peaks safely. For the more experienced, local climbing stores are a great source of information about climbing in the Tetons.
Climbing parties are no longer required to register with the park service for climbs, but permits are required for overnight outings in the park, regardless of whether one is climbing, or not.
