The shutting down of lifts at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort doesn’t dictate the end of ski season. With almost 300 inches of total snowfall for the 2015/2016 season and more snow on the way, Grand Targhee Resort in Alta, Wyoming is a critical stop for those who just haven’t had enough of winter. The resort, which doesn’t stop its lifts until April 17, has a host of activities for adrenaline junkies and families alike. To top it off, the low-key atmosphere and lack of crowds make this resort a hidden gem.

QUICK FACTS

Where? Grand Targhee Resort is located 48 miles from Jackson Hole, Wyoming,  on the west side of the Teton Range. Although located in Wyoming, the resort can only be accessed by road through Driggs, Idaho. Those making the trip can enjoy the beautiful views on the Teton Pass. Along the way, stop by Wildlife Brewing in Victor, Idaho, and try their award-winning micro brews and delicious pizza.  

When? 9 a.m.-4 p.m., November to late April.  

Cost: Single day adult lift tickets top out at $75, but the resort offers several multi-day and package options as well as discounts for seniors, juniors, and beginner lifts only.  

Ages: All ages!  

Intensity: Though not as intense as the nearby Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, Targhee offers plenty of fun and exciting runs. Those looking for a challenge can seek out and enjoy the endless natural features found throughout the mountain, such as tree rails and kickers.  

Highlights: Targhee lacks the crowds that populate Jackson Hole. Those looking for a more relaxed day of skiing and riding without the long lines will thoroughly enjoy Targhee.  

Lowlights: Many of the establishments at the base close by 8 pm. Those looking to enjoy some nightlife should head over to Driggs, Idaho, which is only a 15-minute drive from Targhee.

Skiing and Riding at Grand Targhee

Tucked away in the Western slope of the Tetons, Grand Targhee Resort is a snow lover’s paradise, averaging 500 inches of snowfall annually. Skiers and riders can enjoy 2,602 acres of glades, bowls, and groomed runs without the crowds and long lines. Those learning to ski or ride, or just looking to improve their skills, can take advantage of private or group lessons in snowboarding, Alpine, Telemark, or Nordic Skiing through the Ski & Snowboard School. More advanced skiers and riders can test their skills in the terrain park or enjoy a few runs through the trees.

Snowcat Adventuresand Ski Tours

Skiers and riders can access 602 acres of untracked powder while enjoying majestic views of the mountain with Grand Targhee Snowcat Adventures, Wyoming’s only cat skiing operation. A group of 12 skiers and boarders can experience 18,000 vertical feet of Teton powder as well as expertise from professional guides. Those looking to explore the mountain from a fresh perspective can take advantage of the resort’s snowshoe and ski tours led by a resort naturalist. Participants will learn about the forest, snow tracking, wildlife ecology, bird calls, and the geology of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem and Grand Targhee.

Apres Ski

After a day on the slopes, skiers and riders can unwind at the Trap Bar and Grill. A local favorite, the Trap Bar offers a wide selection of local micro brews on tap, as well as great food such as fish tacos and their famous Wydaho Nachos. Visitors can watch their favorite sports teams on the high-definition TVs or enjoy live music. After the bar, visitors can stop by the resort’s heated outdoor saltwater pool and hot tub for some further relaxation. Those looking to be pampered can enjoy a full range of massage services at Anew Massage, from Swedish, hot stone, and sports massages to orthopedic and deep tissue.

Grand Targhee Resort offers a unique experience that sharply contrasts with its busier neighbor Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. Those looking for fresh tracks and a mellow atmosphere should make the trip to Targhee. The resort has plenty of ridiculously fun runs and a local charm that will keep you coming back.
