On the Water

With an average annual snowfall of 190 inches per year on the valley floor it is no wonder boaters from all over the world flock to this area each spring when the snowpack begins to melt. From the expert kayaker to the first time floater, the Snake River provides every type of river adventure one could hope for.

The whitewater section of the Snake, known as the Canyon, offers eight miles of ripples and rapids. The Snake’s large volume of water equates to a fun and exciting day of adventure in one of the country's most famous stretches of whitewater. Eight rafting companies operate in the canyon. They offer trips of varying length and itineraries that include meals and/or overnight camping. Even President Clinton and the first family have floated through the Canyon, in 1995 when they spent one of their two summer holidays in Jackson Hole.

If getting wet is not your pleasure but you would like to experience the peacefulness of river travel, then float the upper Snake. Scenic trips cover most stretches of the river from The launch area at Pacific Creek to the top of the Snake River Canyon 28 river miles downstream. On many stretches, you are likely to see bald eagles and osprey, and occasionally elk, deer, moose and and black bear. The best times to see wildlife are at the beginning and end of the day. At high noon on a warm summers day, the larger animals bed down out of sight. Even without the wildlife, passengers traveling a five or ten mile scenic stretch are guaranteed awe inspiring views.

Be sure to bring binoculars and a jacket. The water is cold and if the skies are cloudy, you'll appreciate the extra layers.
